When you are trying to lose weight and get fit, it makes sense to have as many weapons in your armoury as possible. You will be looking at eating healthier food, reducing how much food you eat, and also some lifestyle changes like doing more exercise and getting more sleep.
Another activity that is sometimes mentioned in relationship to weigh management is yoga. But how effective is yoga in a weight loss or weight management program?
Evidently, a medical researcher and practicing yogi called Alan Kristal did a medical study on the weight-loss effects of yoga.
He ran a trial involving 15,500 healthy, middle-aged men and women and got them all to comple a survey of their physical activity including yoga and their weight between the ages of 45 and 55.
The results showed that yoga had helped some of them lose weight and also prevented them from gaining weight.
“Those practicing yoga who were overweight to start with lost about 5 pounds during the same time period those not practicing yoga gained 14 pounds,” says Kristal.
To get these results it was necessary to practice yoga for at least one 30-minute session per week for four or more years.
It is not understood exactly how yoga helps people lose weight and keep it off, but the theory is that the results are due to yoga’s mind-body aspects. There is a suspicion that ,” the practice of regular yoga sessions helps to change the relationship of mind to body, and eventually to food and eating.
